The Bite from Kat Kaye on Vimeo
In "The Bite", both video and still imagery are edited together to create a surreal coalescence of fairy tales with a modern twist. The piece opens with a gingerbread man and follows him as he runs from his female captors past Goldilocks and a bear, a lady and a tramp, a skinny mermaid, Cinderella, an Empress with her new clothes, Rapunzel, and a cheshire cat and friends.
A short piece that tells the story of "Speak" using behind the scenes footage
With the saturation of social networking sites within the fabric of our society, we have changed. In a sense, we have begun to communicate in the same cold and aloof manor as a computer operating system. Text messages have shrouded the inflections of tone that give deeper meaning to our words. We are often tethered to our Blackberries and iPhones and immersed in an addiction to incomplete communication to the point where our phones have become another bodily externality.
I chose to use a gun to represent the death of the human voice. What remains is a smokescreen that is built upon our illusory online profiles. Though just as smoke dissipates into nothing, so does the fleeting moments of human connection once the screen shuts off.
Upon recognition of the tight grip that these technologies have upon us, we are able to take back the reigns of communication and steer in a direction of growth and true connection. We can use these tools rather than being used by them. As Maya Angelou once said, "Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning."
